The Discovery Learning tool produces rapid, adaptive learning capabilities which are increasingly required to be effective with high impact consumer satisfaction and cost reduction initiatives. This tool is used to aid in the transfer of learning following a skill-building workshop.
Discovery Learning has proven to be of great value whenever previous training produced less than desired performance, and when “Real-Time” learning is imperative. It may be applied to a variety of training topics to help leaders, team members, salespeople and others improve their results.
The Discovery Learning Process employs a specific method using audio and video recordings as catalysts for examining performance obstacles. The process requires a skilled facilitator who, using video or audio recordings, guides participants through an exploration of their own behavior and helps them examine the obstacles that keep them from performing at peak levels. The facilitator uses a series of inquiries to help the participant discover their personal performance obstacles.
A typical application of the process involves video-taping an individual or team during a meeting. The objective is to record a real time session for review purposes. Carefully constructed details in our method provide significant advantages over the typical video taping approach.
The video taping is done discreetly in order to reduce any sense that participants are “on stage” performing.
Following the video taping, a “recall” session is conducted whereby the control switch for stopping or advancing the tape is placed in the hands of the individual participant.
This shift in the control of determining which portions of the video recording to review serves to establish a significant change in the degree of responsibility the individual (or team) accepts for their own learning.
The facilitator is seen as a resource who aids the participant/s in learning from an “inside out” perspective, in contrast with the instructional training expert who records for the purpose of critiquing performance against a standard to which the participant may not accept at this part in the process.
During the video recall, session participants are encouraged to stop the tape whenever they see something they want to discuss.
The facilitator responds to participants’ self-initiated reviews with insightful questions in order for them to achieve deeper understanding.
